Annan receives his special representative for Sahara
Morocco-UN, Politics, 12/4/1999
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan received on Friday in New York his special representative for the Sahara, William Eaglton.
The talks focused on preparation of the report Annan is to submit next week to the U.N. Security Council on the situation in the Sahara.
The council will hold consultations on the renewal of the term of the U.N. mission for the holding of a referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO), which will expire on December 14.
The Mission is supervising a process to hold a self-determination referendum in the Sahara. The vote is to determine whether the Sahara --a former Spanish colony retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords-- sets up on its own or remains part of Morocco.
