Syrian FM warnes against Israel's ignorance of UN resolutions
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/4/1999
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa has called on the Middle East peace process cosponsors and the international community to shoulder their responsibilities to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East on the grounds of international legitimacy resolutions that provide for Israel's pullout from the Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 borders and from south Lebanon and the western Bekaa, as well as guaranteeing the national rights of the Palestinian people.
This was expressed in the message sent by al-Sharaa, in the name of Syria, to the chairman of the committee in charge of practicing the Palestinian people's inalienable rights, Erad Yavweri Ka, on the occasion of the world day in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In his message, the Syrian FM said that the Middle East peace process is still passing "difficult and complicated stage as a result of the current Israeli government's retreat from the peaceful principles it had debated during its election campaign."
He continued, "By doing so, the Israeli government evades commitment to the bases on which the Madrid peace conference was launched that provides for UN Security Council resolutions, the land-for-peace formula," a matter which would be also considered a violation of obligations, commitments and agreements reached with the previous Israeli Labor-led government during the peace talks held under the patronage and participation of the US.
He also warned against the dangerous consequences of the current situation in the Middle East resulting from the Israeli government's continued ignorance of UN resolutions, violation of international charters and obstruction of the achievement of a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
