Adel Mahfuz Khalifa, the coordinator for the UN's development activities who resides in the United Arab Emirates, expressed his pleasure for the declaration issued by the general manager of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultral Organization) granting Sheikha Fatma Bint Mubarak, the head of the general female union and wife of UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, the Marie Curie Gold Medal of UNESCO, saying the UNESCO honor is granted for the first time to an Arab personality which is not a new appreciation for the efforts of Sheikha Fatma in education and encouraging women to take part in areas of national work and urging them to participate in development plans in the UAE. A 14-year old maid was tortured to death by her employer recently in Kenitra, 40 km north of Rabat.
