Egyptian-Qatari joint committee concludes deliberations

Qatar has joined the Arab states calling for convening an Arab summit. Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Jaber al-Thani called in a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart, Amr Moussa, at the conclusion of the works of the two countries' joint committee for convening an Arab summit to discuss issues facing the Arabs at the present, especially causes pertaining to peace, economy and globalization.

On Wednesday at the conclusion of Tunisian President Zine al-Abidin Ben Ali's visit to Egypt, Egypt and Qatar called for convening an Arab summit. The last Arab summit was held in Cairo in 1996.

Moussa arrived in Doha on Wednesday and held talks with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem, on "bilateral cooperation." He also delivered the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani, a message from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak pertaining to efforts made by the two countries in order to develop their relations in various areas.

On Thursday, Sheikh Hamad stressed that convening the meetings of the Egyptian-Qatari joint committee in Doha indicates that the two countries are determined to develop relations properly and on solid grounds.

For his part Moussa expressed his satisfaction over the results of meetings and talks he held in Qatar. He stressed that discussions dealt with bilateral relations between the two countries, inter-Arab relations in the course of the two countries' desire to maintain joint cooperation and build the common Arab interests.

Concerning the Middle East peace process, Moussa expressed his hope that conditions will be suitable to attaining a progress not only on the Palestinian track but also on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

Meantime and in a joint statement both Egypt and Qatar have stressed the need of reaching a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle east region, according to international legitimacy resolutions. They noted the importance of Israel's abiding by agreements signed with the Palestinians and resuming negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks according to Madrid's terms of reference.

They also stressed their two countries' clinging to finding out a peaceful solution to the situation in Iraq in the course of international legitimacy, its territorial integrity. They also stressed care to maintain Sudan's unity and territorial sovereignty and integrity.

The two sides called for declaring the Middle east region, an area free from mass destruction weapons and called on Israel to join the NPT and the need to subjugate its nuclear institutions to the systems and regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
