Israel's ambassador starts his mission in Mauritania

The Israeli ambassador to Mauritania on Thursday submitted his credentials to Mauritanian President Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya after Mauritania decided to raise its diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level on October 28, despite the public and official anger expressed by several Arab and Islamic states in confrontation of the "denounced" Mauritanian step.

AFP said that the Federation of the Democratic Forces, one of the Mauritanian opposition parties, on Thursday condemned the government for preventing a demonstration which was scheduled in protest of establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.

The official in charge of foreign relations at the party, which called for the demonstration, Ahmad Ould al-Faddal, said taking exaggerated measures on Thursday means that Mauritania is living under martial law.

Instead of the demonstration, the Democratic Forces Federation, which is led by Ahmad Ould Dadah, on Wednesday organized meetings at regional offices where the speakers said they preferred to postpone the demonstration rather than have confrontations with the security forces to ensure the safety of the activists.
