New raids by alliance troops on southern Iraq
Iraq-USA, Military, 12/2/1999
An Iraqi military spokesman said that US and UK jets shelled yesterday evening services and civil establishments in the "no fly zone" in southern Iraq. The spokesman stated that the raiding jets were forced to leave the Iraqi airspace.
Meanwhile the US European Command said today that planes enforcing the northern "no-fly zone" attacked "integrated air defense system" in response to Iraqi anti-aircraft fire "from sites near Bashiqah, northeast of Mosul and from an area near Tall Afar."
This shelling comes as problems prevail among Iraq, the USA and the UK because Iraq announced its oppositon to any draft imposed by the United Nations Security Council that does not include lifting the sanctions on Iraq.
