Women in Kuwait

The Kuwaiti citizens count 798,000 among the country's total population, which is estimated at 2.274 million.

The number of females among the Kuwait is is estimated at 51%, especially among the younger generation to the age of 20.

In a recent study, the Kuwaiti National Bank estimated that women as a group participate as 6% of the labor force, but women contribute to 16% of the GNP, which means, according to the study that "women contribute in a larger share than the men in serving the national economy."

According to independent studies, in the future the role of the Kuwaiti women and their contribution will be increased in administrating the country and in the national economy, with the increase in the volume of investment among women so as to cope with the increase in the volume of employment among women.

The most remarkable among the Kuwaiti women who hold leading positions in the country include Dr. Feyza al-Khurafi, who is the president of the University of Kuwait; Mrs. Iqbal al-Ahmad, the chief editor of the Kuwaiti News Agency, KUNA; Munira al-Malla, Kuwait's ambassador to South Africa; Amal al-Hamad, the assistant secretary at the Ministry of Information for foreign media affairs; Dr. Rasha al-Sabbah the secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education.
