Egyptian FM makes contacts in backing political solution in Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 12/1/1999
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has discussed with the former Sudanese Premier and the chairman of the opposition Ummah Party, al-Sadeq al-Mahdi, the impact of Djibouti agreement on prospects for a comprehensive political solution to the Sudanese crisis.
On Monday Moussa also made intensive contacts to revitalize the efforts for the inter-Sudanese reconciliation and to work for providing a success to the Egyptian-Libyan initiative concerning Sudan.
Moussa said he has made a telephone call to his Libyan counterpart, Omar al-Muntasir, and received a telephone call from the chairman of the Sudanese opposition Democratic National Alliance, Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani.
These contacts, however, fall in the course of the Egyptian-Libyan efforts to achieve national reconciliation in Sudan and to brief the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) partners on the efforts made by both Egypt and Libya and the possibility of coordinating between this Libyan-Egyptian initiative and other initiatives debated to settle the Sudanese crisis.
Moussa also met with the minister of international development and human rights in Norway, Hilde Frafjord Johnson, who seems not to favor the Egyptian - Libyan initiative.
