Religions conference vows to work for achieving coexistence
Regional-Jordan, Religion, 12/1/1999
Some 1,000 religious figures vowed on Monday night to work together to achieve coexistence among the followers of religions in the world and strengthen the culture of peace during the coming millennium.
This was expressed at the conclusion of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, which lasted for five days in the Jordanian capital, Amman. Participants in the seventh session of the world organization's conference on religions and peace, which has New York as a headquarters, released the "Amman declaration," in which they pledged to work together to achieve "coexistence" among various communities.
The conference's secretary general, William Findley, said in the conference's final session that the "conference's 27th session has announced its pledge" to work to achieve this very objective and its intent to launch a "comprehensive educational plan that provides for disseminating the values and traditions of religions."
The Amman declaration also called for achieving a "sustainable human development in the course of fair production systems in order to eliminate poverty." It called on men of religion, politicians and religious leaders to work for protecting world children from the risks of "epidemics, consequences of wars and violence as well as from various forms of exploitation and discrimination"
The Amman declaration also called on governments and non-governmental organizations to work to settle disputes by peaceful means and to eliminate weapons of mass destruction.
