Morocco-Canada, Politics, 11/27/1999
King Mohammed VI met in Ifrane Friday with the speaker of the Canadian Senate, Gildas Molgat, who was accompanied by his country's ambassador to Morocco and four senators.
Morocco and Canada announced on Thursday the creation of friendship and cooperation associations within the Canadian Senate and its Moroccan counterpart, the Chamber of Advisors.
The Canadian official reviewed with Moroccan officials, including peer Mohamed Jalal Essaid, speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdelouahed Radi, and Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi Morocco's political experience, human rights situation, and economic issues.
During their meetings with Moroccan officials, the Canadian delegation members heard explanations on Morocco's democratic strides initiated by constitutional reforms adopted by the late King Hassan II, including bicameralism and the alternation experience that brought to power a Socialist-led coalition government after decades of right-wing rule.
Talks also covered various aspects of bilateral cooperation and the Canadian senators voiced readiness to extend Morocco support and expertise for a rational exploitation of Moroccan sea resources.
