Egypt confirms necessity of removing nuclear weapons from region
Egypt-Egypt, Politics, 11/25/1999

Ambassador Sayed Kassem El-Masri, the Egyptian assistant foreign minister for international relations, assured that "the unanimity of the U.N's general assembly - lately - on the draft resolution presented by Egypt for establishing a free zone of nuclear weapons is a carnation for the Egyptian president Mubarak's call and his initiative regarding the necessity of evacuating the Middle East from the mass destructive weapons."

In press declarations yesterday, El-Masri said "this consent on Egypt's and president Mubarak's call in this matter - reflects the great support by the international community and the international recognition for Egypt's efforts and its attempts to get rid of these deadly weapons so that security and real peace could be achieved for every body - emphasizing that this is considered a success to the Egyptian policy and its role."

He also referred that 123 countries members in the U.N agreed on the Egyptian draft resolution regarding nonproliferation in the Middle East while the resolution was opposed by 3 countries which are U.S.A, Israel and Micronesia and that 11 countries refrained from voting.
