Arab League sends commission to IGAD summit
Regional-Somalia, Politics, 11/23/1999
An Arab League commission would head to Djibouti next Friday to participate in the summit of East African Inter-Governemental Authority on Development (IGAD), designed to restore order in Somalia.
The decision to send the mission was decided after a meeting between Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid and the permanent representatives of Algeria, Tunisia, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Djibouti, Egypt and Somalia at the Arab League.
Abdul Meguid told reporters the AL council welcomed the initiative of Djibouti to maintain peace in Somalia.
He said the permanent representatives called on all Somali tribes and parties to deal with the Djiboutian intiative in a positive manner to reach a national reconciliation.
The president of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, said last September that the initiative would focus on giving a bigger role for leaders of tribes and civil community institutions in solving the Somali problem.
