Lebanon celebrates independence anniversary

On Monday Lebanon celebrated the 56th anniversary of its independence. Official and popular celebrations were held in all parts of Lebanon.
To mark this occasion, a central military parade was held on Abdullah al-Yafi Avenue in Beirut in the presence of Lahoud, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss. It was also attended by the commander of the Lebanese Army, Lt. Gen. Michele Suleiman, the Lebanese Cabinet ministers, a delegation of Syrian military officers, Lebanese dignitaries and a delegation representing UNIFIL.
Taking part in the parade were various units representing the Lebanese Army and security forces, especially the "special units" and contingents of tanks, artillery and armored vehicles.
Meantime, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Monday evening made a telephone call to Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and congratulated him on the National Day of Lebanon. Al-Assad expressed best wishes for Lebanon's prosperity and progress. Talks also dealt with issues of concern to Syria and Lebanon.
