Euro-Arab conference to tackle water crisis in the next century
Regional, Politics, 11/23/1999

The Arab - European studies center will hold a conference on February 21, 2000 in Cairo to discuss the question of "Arab water security." According to official available data, 90% of the Arab lands are situated within arid or semi-arid areas.

For that reason it is expected that 75% of the population of the Arab region will face a food and water crisis during the two coming decades of the 21st century.

However, the importance of the conference lies on the fact that it will not only deal with Arab water security challenges arising as a result of the conflict over ground waters or rivers that pours or pass in certain Arab states, and spring from neighboring countries, but will also deal with sovereignty over the territorial sea waters which are of no less importance.
