First Lady Mubarak inaugurates conference on 2nd Decade for Egyptian Child
Egypt, Culture, 11/22/1999

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak Saturday said that Egypt has made a wide stride and a big transformation in the first decade of the Egyptian child which had a direct effect in the vital spheres such as health, education and culture which are the mainstays of efforts exerted over the past 10 years and complementary efforts in the field of information and legislation.

Mrs. Mubarak was addressing the three-day national conference to declare the second decade of the Egyptian child (2000/2010) which was held by the National Conference of Childhood and Maternity at the beginning of Egypt's celebration of childhood festivals. She said "today we declare a new decade of the Egyptian child, to be a new link in a long chain which links between the efforts of the past, the achievements of the present and a vision of the future."

She affirmed that the first decade launched by President Hosni Mubarak in 1998 was characterized by sincere efforts, good intentions and brilliant future for the nation.
She said it was a good coincidence that both the first and the second decades of the Egyptian child take place at the beginning of a new phase of national action in Egypt with all its aspirations and challenges.

"The conference also comes at a time where we aspire to revive the spirit of social action after we have gone a long way on the road of economic reform".

"To give care to the child is the first step on the road of the progress of society and the welfare of the citizen," Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak said pointing out that dealing with childhood pushing forward serious action is the first step forward.

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, who chairs the Technical Consultant Committee of the National Childhood and motherhood council, said that our hopes are pinned on bringing up a child who is strong in body, enlightened, innovative, capable of taking the initiative and able to face challenges of the present and anticipate the future using the scientific method in thinking.
Hopes are pinned on bringing up a child who has a deep feeling of democracy, tolerance, positive participation and shouldering responsibility and who respects the rights of others -- a child who has a strong feeling of affiliation to his country, who takes pride in his nation and has a strong desire to serve it and improve its condition.

The main target of the national conference, which is to declare the second decade of the Egyptian child, is crystallized in this vision and this philosophy.

"It is incumbent upon us to go forward with firm steps and courage because we live in a world where there is no place except for those who depend on serious work, sincere effort and sound vision," Mrs. Mubarak said.
She, further, added that high technology is a prominent feature of our world and the strongest instrument of the age where we live.

Mrs. Mubarak said she was completely satisfied with the harmony which existed between the three elements -- health, education and culture -- and the efforts exerted during the first decade of the Egyptian child.

"We have taken clear strides to realize the aspired goals," she said referring to the big national cultural project which was launched under the motto "reading for all."

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak said that in declaring the beginning of the second decade of the Egyptian child "We rely on the conception by the Childhood and Motherhood Council under the title "towards a strategy to develop childhood and motherhood up to the year 2010"
Our move in future rests on two foundations, namely the humanitarian and development dimensions.
