Moroccan-US accord on water management in southern Morocco

Morocco and the United States concluded on Thursday in the southwestern Moroccan city of Agadir an agreement on water management in the Souss-Massa region.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is contributing $12 million to set up an agency of the Souss-Massa basin that will enable, by associating the public and private sectors, to improve water management in the region.
The agency will promote techniques to save water and improve the management of the precious commodity that is becoming so scare in view of consecutive drought years and over-exploitation of water sheets.
During the signing ceremony, several ministers took the floor to underline the need to face the drought problem through the use of techniques to stock water and ration water use either in households or in industrial plants and to associate both the public and the private sectors in the endeavor.
The U.S ambassador to Rabat, Edward Gabriel, who was present at the signing ceremony, said the project translates the United States' commitment to back Morocco's development and modernization efforts.
He said, the USAID has included the vital sector of water in its program of backing to Morocco, in addition to its contribution to the sectors of education and health.
