Morocco-Turkey, Politics, 11/19/1999
Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Benaissa renewed Thursday to Turkish President Suleymen Demirel an invitation by King Mohammed VI to pay an official visit to Morocco.
The Turkish president, who accepted the invitation, expressed the wish that King Mohammed VI pay a state visit to Turkey. "This will be a great day for myself and for the Turkish government and people to welcome H.M the King," President Demirel said.
The Turkish head of state renewed the esteem and consideration he harbors for the sovereign and voiced appreciation for the backing and assistance extended by Morocco to his country on the morrow of the earthquakes that jolted Turkey in August and November.
Benaissa, who is visiting Turkey to take part in the ongoing summit of the organization for security and cooperation in Europe, had earlier conferred with his Turkish peer, Ismail Cem, on bilateral relations.
The Turkish foreign minister underlined the importance of Morocco and its cultural heritage that he described as "unique," saying the kingdom "plays a key role in the region and is more than ever able to help Turkey in the new approach it adopted to upgrade its relations with Maghreban and African countries.
Benaissa proposed the setting up of an appropriate frame for continued political consultations and expressed the wish that the joint commission, whose latest session was held in November 1996, convenes at the latest by next February.
The private sector can be associated to the debates of the commission that will provide opportunity to further talks on the setting up of a free trade area, Benaissa said.
The two sides called for the signing of association accords, the setting up of joint ventures and the organizing of joint economic and cultural events.
Casablanca is hosting as of next Wednesday an exhibition of turkish products and Turkish minister of state, Hasan Gemici, is expected in Morocco Monday on a four day visit for talks with members of the Moroccan cabinet, executives of the chamber of commerce, industry and services and members of the employers' association "la confederation generale des entreprises du Maroc" (CGEM).
