Indonesia postpones establishment of relations with Israel
Israel-Indonesia, Politics, 11/19/1999

Indonesia has postponed plans to establish trade relations with Israel following large mass protest to such plans.

The Indonesian news agency INTARA said that Indonesia's foreign minister Alawi Shehab described these plans as mere wishes rather than a government's policy.

He explained that the Indonesian government will not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel unless the Palestinians get their rights to establish their own independent states, noting that the government will make consultations with the parliament before establishing trade relations with Israel.

However, several demonstrations were made in Jakarta against these relations since the President of Indonesia announced his readiness to establish trade relations with Israel and the Indonesian parliament refused all these attitudes towards Israel.
