Morocco marks Independence Day
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 11/18/1999

Morocco is marking this November 18 its Independence Day, a commemoration bearing deep historic implications and a motivation for upcoming generations to safeguard the country's independence snatched after huge sacrifices.

It was on November 18, 1955, that, returning from a forced exile, the late King Mohammed V solemnly announced the end of the tutorship and protectorate regime and the start of an era of independence and freedom. This statement was actually a call to all Moroccans to work for the emergence of a new Morocco.

The long and fierce struggle for independence finally made the colonial authorities realize that they cannot subdue the Moroccans nor scorn their dignity. They yielded in and received on November 6, 1995 in Paris the late King Mohammed V for the signing of a statement in which the French colonial authorities recognized Morocco's right to independence and sovereignty.
