Travel procedures relaxed in Syria
Syria, Politics, 11/18/1999

Travel procedures were relaxed for both citizens living in Syria and those living abroad, Syrian officials said on Wednesday. The officials added that under new rules issued by Syrian Minister of the Interior Muhammad Harba, Syrian citizens who had done military service would no longer need the approval of military service departments to get an exit visa.

The rules were issued to coincide with Syria's celebrations of the 29th anniversary of the "Correctionist Movement" taken by President Hafez al-Assad. The officials added that travel experts said that this decision would be warmly welcomed by citizens living in the country and those living abroad because it would greatly ease their travel plans.

The travel experts added that many Syrians living abroad were reluctant to come home because travel procedures had been difficult.

Exit visas, which in the past required at least 30 days to be completed for those who did military service, can now be completed in one day with one yearlong validity and multiple exits instead of a one-month validity and a single exit.

The officials continued that several categories of citizens who in the past required an exit visa to leave the country can now go abroad without any exit visa, including males over 50, people exempt from conscription and women, except those aged 18- 35 who are required by countries they intend to visit to have such a visa.

All Syrian expatriates who come home for vacation and stay for less than three months can now leave again without an exist visa. Previous rules required those who stayed even one day to obtain an exit visa to go out.
