Report: Barak's diplomatic campaign against Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 11/17/1999

The Jordanian paper al-Hadath quoted well-informed sources in Amman as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is currently making a diplomatic campaign aimed at making world leaders understand that he is in need of "small Syrian concessions," to find a pretext for the extremists inside and outside the Israeli Knesset to reach a formula of understanding with Syria and then to sign a peace agreement with it.

In a report in its new issue under the title "An Israeli campaign against Damascus in Europe," the paper added that "Barak's campaign" has succeeded in convincing the Americans of the idea of pressuring Syrian President Hafez al-Assad to resume negotiations without Barak officially committing himself to withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 border lines, as Syria wishes.

Al-Hadath added that among the details of the Israeli campaign against Syria in the Western circles, claims made by Barak that President al-Assad is refusing peace with Israel through refusing to hold a summit meeting with Barak or at least a meeting between the two sides' foreign ministers, Farouk al-Sharaa and David Levy.

The paper added that Syria's refusal to hold such meetings and setting preconditions to resume negotiations had prompted observers to say that this will lead to isolating Syria.
