Baghdad announces the death of 9,000 Iraqis in October

Baghdad announced on Monday that more than 9,000 Iraqis died in October, the majority of them children. This will increase the victims of the UN embargo imposed on Iraq to 1.2 million.

A statement released by the Iraqi Ministry of Health on Monday said that 9,040 Iraqis, including 6,122 children under the age of five, died during October as a result of being affected by diseases such as diarrhea, breathing and lung diseases and malnutrition.

The statement added that 2,918 of the elderly died as a result of heart-disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The statements continued that these new statistics raise the number of Iraqis who died since imposing the UN embargo in August 1990 to 1,205,492 persons.

The said statements explained that deaths among children under five during October 1989, before imposing the UN embargo was 272 children and 291 among the elderly for the first month.
