Signing Egyptian - Korean cooperation agreements
Egypt-South Korea, Politics, 11/15/1999

Egypt and South Korea signed two cooperation agreements, the first for peaceful cooperation in using nuclear energy and the second for a cooperation protocol between the Egyptian diplomatic institute and the Foreign Ministry and ministries of national security and trade in South Korea.

This came at the conclusion of the discussions that were held yesterday under the chairmanship of Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Hong Sun-yong.

After the meeting, Moussa told reporters that their talks covered relations between the two countries. They also disclosed that the legal framework of economic relations between Cairo and Seoul has been completed while signing the agreements on preventing double taxation and protecting investments in both countries.

Moussa added that the talks also dealt with the situation in the Middle East, southeast Asia and the Mediterranean. They also discussed several international issues including the US initiative on preventive diplomacy and an array of other issues which have an impact on emerging economy.

Moussa and his Korean counterpart spoke of the clash of civilizations theory and probe ways of preventing it and turning it into cultural interaction. The Korean top diplomat expressed his country's support for Egypt's efforts in the Middle East peacemaking.

In response to a question about a possible Egyptian mediation between the two Koreas, Moussa said Egypt is greatly interested in global peace and is following this issue with great concern. "The Korean issue is taking a different turn now. Although we don't have any part in the new developments we follow them very closely," Moussa told reporters.

When asked about the mechanism whereby Egypt was planning to remedy the negative impact of the economic transformation, Moussa said any economic reform steps must have some negative sides, adding that international cooperation can be very helpful in this regard.

They confirmed after the discussions that they are resuming joint discussions on protecting and encouraging investments, saying that they tackled different aspects of bilateral relations.
