Opposition: Confrontation in Bahrain between demonstrators, security forces
Bahrain, Politics, 11/15/1999

The opposition in Bahrain said on Saturday that confrontations took place on Friday between anti-government demonstrators and security forces in Manama.

AFP quoted the al-Bahrain Ahrar movement, an opposition movement which takes London as a headquarters, as saying in a statement that special units intervened to disperse the march organized to condemn the government's policy and human rights practices.

The statement said the demonstrators threw stones at members of the security forces, adding that these demonstrations came a few years after the authorities had closed down the mosques.

The statement said that explosions took place on Thursday in several areas of the country.

As of December 1994 Bahrain has witnessed acts of violence by the Shiite opposition that have resulted in killing at least 38 persons.
