Algerian Islamic official demands to change law on personal affairs
Algeria, Culture, 11/12/1999

The head of the supreme Islamic council in Algeria, Abd El-Magid Mezyan, stated that the current Algerian family law is injust to women's rights and that it must be revised. He emphasized the importance of changing the law.

Mezyan expressed his belief that the current stage in the shadow of democracy in Algeria states that the laws must be balanced and adhere to each other.

He said that political events previously prevented revising the family law, and urged looking seriously at women's role considering their current achievements, "therefore we should regard the women in frame of citizenship and human rights."
