Algerian media comments on Morocco's ex- minister of interior
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 11/11/1999

The Algerian newspapers expressed relief at the discharging of Driss Basri, the former Moroccan minister of interior, and it published this news on front pages and in its main headlines.

The newspaper blamed Basri for the troubled relations between Algeria and Morocco due to his stance on the Sahara issue and the attempt to play the Armed Group card against Algeria.

The daily newspapers said that the Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI, realized that Basri, who remained a captive of the past, could not serve a trend imposed by the regional and international facts; therefore, he started to limit Basri's authority through discharging him from the post of the regional security department then exempting him from supervising the Sahara file as a step that was clearly aimed from the start at getting rid of Basri's influence and power.
