Regional-UN, Politics, 11/11/1999
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has asserted the UN's full backing for the Middle East peace process.
On his report conducted on the situation in the Middle East, which was circulated on Wednesday by the UN office in Beirut, Annan said the UN General Assembly expresses the hope that the peace process will lead to the establishment of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
He added that the UN stresses the need to abide by the land-for-peace formula and implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338.
Annan said that finding a peaceful and permanent solution to the Palestine issue is a necessary condition to achieving peace. Annan expressed his hope that the Lebanese and Syrian tracks revive as security, stability and peace are achieved for all sides on the grounds of UN Security Council resolutions 425, 338 and 424 and the land-for-peace formula.
The UN secretary general stated that Tuji Rudlars from Norway was assigned as the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
