King Mohammed sends message to Tunisian president
Morocco-Tunisia, Politics, 11/10/1999

King Mohammed VI has sent a message to president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia conveyed by the Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, who paid a short visit to Tunis Monday and Tuesday.

During the meeting that lasted more than one hour, the two sides discussed a set of issues of mutual concern, with a special emphasis on the positive evolution of Moroccan-Tunisian cooperation, Benaissa told MAP bureau in Tunis.

Talks also covered the latest developments in the Maghreb and the Middle East, and the evolution of the peace process, to which both Morocco and Tunisia are attached and which must result in the setting up of an independent Palestinian state and in the withdrawal of Israel from all occupied territories, Benaissa said.

Means of upgrading bilateral cooperation and promote joint actions in the economic, socio-cultural and political fields were discussed in addition to Euro-Mediterranean and Euro-Maghreban relations, the foreign minister said.

On Monday night, Benaissa was guest to a dinner hosted in his honor by his Tunisian peer, Said Benmostapha. The two sides discussed on the occasion several issues of mutual concern and stressed the need to efficiently follow up the decisions made by the Moroccan-Tunisian high joint commission.

This was Benaissa's second trip to Tunisia in the course of the past few weeks.

Morocco and Tunisia are both members of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) that also musters Algeria, Libya and Mauritania.
