Relative coolness in the relations between Egypt, the US
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 11/10/1999

A well-informed source in Cairo linked between the visit currently made by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Paris to take part in the efforts to revive the Middle East peace process, especially on the Syrian-Israeli track, and "relative coolness" in the Egyptian - US relations and relative tensions in the relations between Paris and Washington as well as with the current stalemate in the peace contacts between Damascus and Tel Aviv through Washington.

The sources told the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas issued on Tuesday that President Mubarak aimed out of his visit to Paris to take part in a move that brings together closer stances of sides taking part in the current peace contacts. But the sources, at the same time, denied that Mubarak's visit to Paris and his absence from last week's Oslo summit are intended by Egypt to separate from Washington's policy.

The sources added that a stalemate has been prevailing the Syrian-Israeli contacts via Washington due to the Israeli government's backing for the settlement movement in the Golan. The sources expected this settlement to continue until the end of the December.

The sources indicated that the Egyptian leadership will assure to both the French and the Syrians that making "a deformed peace" on the Palestinian track will damage the Syrians, who will be then cornered by the "deformed peace."
