Signs of crisis between government and parliament in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 11/9/1999

A speech delivered by General El-Hadi Beshri, the Sudanese minister of roads and communications, in the National Council (the parliament) stirred up tensions with the ruling party, the National Conference.

The minister accused a company headed by Ali El-Haj, the deputy secretary general of the ruling party, of involvement in financial violations and corruption.

Ali El-Haj convened a press conference in which he attacked the minister and said that this is not the specialty of the minister. El-Haj also said he was taking legal procedures against the minister.

The parliament took a decision of presenting the report presented by the minister of roads and communications, which includes incidents of corruption, to a specialized committee made up of the council's members.

Analysts in Khartoum expect that these incidents may cause a crisis between the government and the parliament.
