Green March anniversary celebrated
Morocco, Politics, 11/8/1999

Inhabitants in the southern city of Laayoune, like Moroccans everywhere in the kingdom and abroad, celebrated the 24th anniversary of the "Green March" which enabled Morocco to peacefully recover its southern provinces in 1975.

On this occasion, the city was unusually busy with rallies, meetings and inaugurations of several social facilities like dispensaries, women's centers and children's nurseries.

Speakers took the floor to stress the importance of the anniversary, list achievements made in every sector and renew commitment to mobilize for further development under the leadership of King Mohammed VI who shows special care for the people in southern provinces.

Author Hadda Younes from Laayoune seized the opportunity to send her new book to the sovereign as a token of loyalty and faithfulness of Sahrawi women. The book called "After the Green March" is devoted to women who volunteered and took part in the successful march initiated by the late King Hassan II. Similar activities were held in the Moroccan southern city of Dakhla with more rallies and inaugurations including water-supply systems in neighboring villages and sports facilities in the city.

In Rabat, the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) in a release said that 24 years after recovery of southern provinces, it was time to adopt a new approach and reaffirm Morocco's adamant sacred rights.

The party's political bureau said populations there suffered from problems similar to those in the rest of the kingdom and warned against use by anti-Moroccan sides of social and democratic claims.

In Tunis, delegates of several political parties participated in a popular rally held under the chairmanship of Ambassador Abdelkader Benslimane.

Representatives of the Istiqlal, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the National Democrat Party (PND), the Popular Movement (MP) and the Democrat Social Movement (MDS) who attended the works of the 11th International Symposium of the Tunisian Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD in power) took part in activities held in celebration by the Moroccan community of the Green March anniversary.
