Tripartite meetings in Paris
Regional, Politics, 11/8/1999

The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily said in its Sunday issue that observers in the French capital do not rule out convening of a tripartite meeting between French President Jacques Chirac, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in the course of the series of meetings the French president is holding with Mubarak, currently visiting Paris, and Barak.

The paper added, according to observers, that meetings between Chirac, Mubarak and Bashar al-Assad, son of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, and between Mubarak and Bashar have not been ruled out.

Quoting French sources, the paper added that this weekend's meetings will center on explaining the viewpoints of each side separately, especially the Syrian viewpoint conveyed by Col. Bashar al-Assad. The French sources stated that these meetings are explanatory only and that France will get the final answers following the return of Bashar to Damascus.

In Kuwait, the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas said on Sunday that Bashar al-Assad will debate in details in Paris the Syrian stand concerning the question of peace.

The Kuwaiti daily added that Bashar al-Assad will assert the Syrian attitude towards cohesion between the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.
