Report: Eritrean military buildup along the borders with Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 11/8/1999

The Sudanese daily al-Share' al-Seyassi issued on Sunday said that Eritrea has built up its troops along the borders with Sudan and that these troops, which are equipped with heavy weapons, may be ready to launch a nearby attack.

The paper quoted eyewitnesses who arrived from the eastern province of Kasla which borders Ethiopia as saying that the Eritrean forces, which had built up troops along the border, were provided with heavy military equipment instead of the light weapons that are usually used by border guards.

The paper quoted sources that it did not identify as saying that the buildup of forces is evidence of the logistic backing provided by Eritrea for the rebels in southern Sudan to help them transfer US military equipment that had already been received via Uganda to the eastern parts of Sudan.
