Al-Bashir: We want to develop historical relations with Britain
Sudan-UK, Politics, 11/5/1999

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has asserted upon receiving the credentials of newly-appointed British Ambassador Richard Makepeace, his country's readiness to develop "historical relations" with Britain.

In a celebration held on Tuesday at the Sudanese presidential palace, al-Bashir received the credentials of the British ambassador who had arrived in Khartoum following the agreement maintained by Khartoum and London to restore relations. In August 1998, Khartoum withdrew its ambassador from London and asked the British ambassador to leave the country following Britain's backing for the US bombardment of al-Shifaa pharmaceutical factory in Sudan.

During the celebration, the Sudanese president said the British ambassador will be acquainted with the Sudanese achievements in the areas of peace and economic development.

For his part, the British ambassador said he will spare no efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. He expressed his country's desire to take part in the efforts made to achieve peace in Sudan.

Sudan used to be under the British colonialism before it got its independence.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the United Democratic Front for Salvation, which is allied to the government, said that some 15 fighters from the front were executed on Sunday in the southern province of al-Wahda at the hands of another group which is also aligned with the Sudanese government.

The spokesman, Makwak Tiny Yuke, said commander Anjelo Rawi and 24 of his officers were shot to death by members of the United Army, which is another rival group led by Gen. Polino Matib at the support of the government's army.

The United Democratic Front and the United Army are waging a war with the southern rebel of the Sudan People's Liberation Army led by John Garang.
