Palestinian President Yasser Arafat resumed today his severe criticism of Israeli settlement in the occupied territories, saying that the settlements threaten the peace process in the Middle East and urging an immediate halt to Israeli settlement in the Palestinian lands. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak gave a two-day period of time for demolishing the illegal settlements which he specified and asked the settlers to leave them, warning that the Israeli security forces will intervene if this order is not implemented. Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid informed the Russian government of the importance of finding a political solution immediately for the Russian war against the province of Chechnya, saying that a war against the people is not against terrorism. This came during the meeting between the Abdul Meguid and the minister of nationalism in the Russian government, Ramadan Abd El-Lateebov, in AL headquarters, as Abdul Meguid asserted to the Russian official the importance of differentiating between terrorism, extremism and Islam and that there is no relation between terrorism and Islam, for it is a religion of tolerance. The United Arab Emirates' al-Bayan daily said, quoting sources which it described as reliable in Amman, that the secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Nayef Hawatemah, will visit Amman during the first half of this month in an attempt to urge Amman to mediate for his return back to the self-rule areas after the Israeli government had suspended its approval on its return back following statements he had made and considered by Israel as "unaccepted." A conference for Arab businessmen and investors will be held in Tunisia on November 23 - 25 to discuss obstacles impeding the expansion of the activities conducted by the businessmen and increasing the volume of trade exchange among states and investment in the Arab free trade zone. The participants in the conference will concentrate on investment in the Arab free trade zone which was declared in the beginning of this year. The Arab League gives its members a ten-year grace period to join this zone. Go

A Dutch expedition in Syria has discovered a residential complex that dates back to the new stone age in the seventh millennium BC. The residential complex, which was unearthed in the province of al-Raqqa, 550 km northeast of the capital, Damascus, includes circular houses, warehouses for the storage of cereals and several sculptures. Four Arab states will participate in the European Conference on Security and Cooperation that will held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on November 18 - 19 with the participation of 54 kings and heads of state in the organization, in addition to the Mediterranean partnership countries -- Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Israel -- as well as South Korea and Japan.
