Egypt refuses to cancel the death penalty
Egypt-UN, Politics, 11/4/1999
Sources in the Egyptian Ministry of Justice asserted the Egyptian government's refusal of the European Union's draft presented at the UN General Assembly to cancel the death penalty all over the world, characterizing the penalty as a violation of human rights.
The Egyptian ministry said this draft contradicts the mutual respect for existing disputes among different cultures, civilizations and societies.
The sources told ArabicNews.com that every country has a right to reflect its people's beliefs with policies which go with the prevailing values in it.
The sources added that Ahmed Abu El-Ghait, Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN, was informed of this refusal, considering it Egypt's formal stance toward this draft and recommended holding discussions with the Arab and Islamic states to adopt and support the Egyptian position on this draft.
