Washington: Israel did not vow a complete withdrawal from the Golan
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 11/4/1999
The US administration on Wednesday denied that Israel had accepted restoring back the occupied Syrian Golan Heights during the peace negotiations which were suspended in 1996. An official at the US State Department said, "There were no agreements in this respect."
The statements of the US official were made in response to what Syrian Minister of Information Muhammad Salman had been quoted as saying that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright did not argue with statements made by Syrian officials that "Israel had pledged to maintain withdrawal from the whole of the Golan against peace."
Last September, Albright discussed with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in Damascus means of reviving the Syrian-Israeli negotiations following three years of suspension.
The US State Department kept silent towards the content of the US mediation efforts. The US official said, "We do not talks about details of our negotiations with the sides concerned in this regard."
