Sudan for a common Arab strategy
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 11/4/1999
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael has asserted his country's opposition to any normalization of relations with Israel before reaching a just and comprehensive peace and Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and from south Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a press conference he held in Tripoli, Libya on Wednesday, the Sudanese minister described Mauritania's establishment of full diplomatic relations with Israel as falling in the course of "partitioning the Arab ranks," asserting that normalization of relations with Israel weakens the Arab position.
He expressed his conviction that the Arab atmospheres are suitable for achieving Arab solidarity, revitalizing joint Arab work mechanism and reaching the minimum average of reconciliation in a united Arab foreign policy.
Ismael asserted the need of Arab economic integration so as to withstand globalization and future challenges.
As for the situation in Sudan, the Sudanese minister added, "We are waiting for what will be concluded from the Libyan- Egyptian initiative," adding that Sudan had approved the five items of the initiative and accepted the ceasefire, the media campaigns, and the place of the meeting as chosen by the opposition, but, "Sudan will not accept to have imposed on him a painful situation not accepted by the Sudanese people."
