Committee in Kuwait's Ummah council opposes women's participation in elections
Kuwait, Politics, 11/3/1999

The parliamentary committee in the Kuwaiti Ummah council opposed the amendment suggested by Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jabir al-Ahmed al-Sabah of women's participation in the Kuwaiti elections.

A battle will take place when the draft is raised in the parliament, as a committee from the defense and interior ministries that was chosen by the council in the last week opposed the emir's decree, saying that amending the Kuwaiti election law is not an urgent decision so that an emiri decree is issued concerning it during the parliament's absence.

The Islamic members on the council say that the government issued 60 laws, most of which are not urgent, during the time when the parliament was dissolved.

The committee stopped at issuing a recommendation on when a matter concerns an "emiri decree."
