Arab League asks to join WTO as observer
Regional, Economics, 11/3/1999

The Arab League has called on the European Commission and the current president of the European Union to back the request submitted by the Arab League general secretariat to join the World Trade Organization, which has Geneva as a headquarters, as an observer.

This was expressed during the meeting held on Tuesday in Cairo by Arab League chief Esmat Abdul Meguid, the Finnish ambassador in Cairo, whose country is currently presiding over the European Union, and the EU representative in Cairo.

In statements to reporters following the meeting, Abdul Meguid stressed that the AL is not only a political organization but also an Arab organization for trade and economic interests. He added that the greater Arab trade area was established, saying that it includes 18 Arab states and that it has the right to "join the WTO as an observer."

The AL chief said the AL has taken several measures and is making intensive contacts with sides concerned to take the necessary measure in this respect.
