Morocco calls for creation of Mediterranean seaside observatory

Morocco has called for the setting up of a scientific observatory of the mediterranean seaside, to be placed under the aegis of the UNESCO.

The institution would conduct engineering studies on the Mediterranean coasts, collect data on the sea, monitor the evolution of the sealine and provide information to decision-makers and operators.

The call was launched here Monday by secretary of state for scientific research, Omar Fassi, at the opening of a seminar on the benefits of implementing the Global Ocean Observing System in the Mediterranean, held in Rabat by the UNESCO intergovernmental Oceanographic commission.

The three-day seminar is attended by experts from 15 Mediterranean countries and delegates of international organizations.

The Global Ocean Observing System seeks to prepare a global permanent observing frame to supply governments and sea-industries services information on fishing, weather forecasts, public health tourism, agriculture, energy resources management.
