Polisario leader should be tried, says defector
Morocco, Politics, 11/2/1999
The military mutiny in Tindouf camps prove Polisario leader Mohamed Abdelaziz should resign and be tried for atrocities he subjected detainees in the camps, said Ahmed Salah Ould Mohamed Salem, one of the uprising leaders who returned to Morocco recently.
Ahmed Salah told the daily Assahra Al Maghribya that the rebellion that followed the failure of Polisario's latest congress called for dissolution of the secretariat general and apologies to people sequestrated and tortured in the camps.
The Sahara might be heading for unprecedented chaos if Abdelaziz stays and civil war will wipe out the populations starting with those detained in Tindouf, he said.
He also made a plea to international human relief organizations and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to protect Tindouf detainees, especially children and women, who can face revenge in retaliation for the uprisings of 1988 and the one underway since September led by Ayoub Habib and his comrades.
