Jordanian king voices backing for internal reform, and Syrian peace position
Jordan-Regional, Politics, 11/2/1999

Jordan's King Abdullah vowed on Monday to rejuvenate his country's sluggish economy by attracting more foreign investors and accelerating IMF-directed reforms.

He added, "The question of economic development, restructuring our national economy, activating the private sector, creating an attractive investment climate, providing infrastructure and dealing with the foreign debt " are "the top of our priorities," while addressing a joint session of 80 elected members of parliament and 40 appointed senators (al-Ayan House), the upper house.

In his address to the Jordanian parliament on Monday in Amman, the Jordanian King stressed that his government will continue its efforts to give a push forward to the Middle East peace process through making progress on all tracks.

King Abdullah II of Jordan also asserted his country's backing to Syria and Lebanon. This was expressed in the king's statement that Jordan "will not fail to support them (Syria and Lebanon) regain rights and occupied land."

The Jordanian monarch also said his government will continued to back the Palestinians until they are able to regain their rights and establish their own independent state on their national soil with the holy city of Jerusalem as a capital. He urged the lifting the sanctions imposed on Sudan and Iraq.

The Jordanian king continued that Jordan will continue its "loyal and sincere efforts" to settle inter-Arab disputes and enable the Arabs to overcome their differences.
