Mauritania's students in Damascus demonstrate in protest of diplomatic relations with Israel
Mauritania, Politics, 11/2/1999

Mauritanian students in Syrian universities and institutes on Monday held a demonstration in front of their country's embassy in Damascus in protest of the decision taken by the government of Mauritania to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel.

The angry demonstrators burned the Israeli flag, while they were chanting slogans demanding that the government of Mauritania reconsider its normalization steps in light of Israel occupying Arab territory, obstructing the Middle East peace process and standing against any efforts made to resume the peace process.

The students described the current government in Mauritania as a "puppet regime" which responded to the wish of Israel and was dragged to "mere dreams and illusions" at the expense of the Arab states' rights for the interests of Israel, SANA reported.
