Two Mauritanian journalists expelled from their union over visiting Israel
Mauritania, Politics, 11/1/1999

The Mauritanian Journalists Union has decided to expel journalists Muhammad Khal Ould Ahmad, the director of the news department at the Mauritanian television and the news director at the Mauritania's radio, Alfa Ankidi, from the union's membership over visiting Israel and violating the decision taken by the Mauritanian Journalists Union and the Arab Journalists Union which ban normalization of relations with Israel in any form.

The Mauritanian Journalists Union also denounced Abu Baker Ould Othman, who is the secretary general of the independent press national league (a Franchophonic league) over making the same visit with the two expelled journalists last week.

Two weeks ago, the Jordanian Journalists Union had expelled three of its members for the same reason.

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Arab Journalists Union, Salaheddin Hafez, stressed that the union's general secretariat is closely following up on all attempts to violate the decisions of the union banning normalization and calling on the union's members to take tough measures against everyone who violates the common stand of the Arab journalists, a decision reinforced during the recent meeting of the union's permanent bureau held in Cairo.

Othman added that the decision taken by the Jordanian and Mauritanian Journalists Unions come in line with the common policy pursued by the general federation of Arab journalists.
