Sudanese government supports Egyptian - Libyan initiative
Sudan, Politics, 10/30/1999
The world observes the developments through which the Egyptian - Libyan initiative for solving the Sudanese crisis passes and the statements of US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, which opposes it.
Following his meeting yesterday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael confirmed his country's strong support for the initiative and its appreciation for the role Egypt played in coordination with Libya for achieving peace in Sudan.
International observers believe the USA shouldn't object to the Arab initiative, which the USA regarded as an alternative to the IGAD (Inter-Governmental Authority on Development) initiative.
It also should negotiate with Cairo to reach a form that leads to lift the obstacles that obstructed the way to reconciliation in Sudan and take in consideration what Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said to the US envoy to Sudan, Harry Johnston, in that the interest of Egypt in Sudanese affairs is due to dimensions related to Egypt's security and strategy.
