El-Mahdi confirms adherence to Egyptian - Libyan initiative
Sudan, Politics, 10/30/1999
During his meeting with the US envoy to Sudan, Harry Johnston, in Cairo yesterday, El-Sadek El-Mahdi, leader of the Sudanese opposition Ummah Party, confirmed the adherence of his party and the Sudanese Democratic National Alliance which includes the Sudanese opposition factions, to the Egyptian - Libyan peace initiative.
He said this initiative includes all the parts of dispute and all causes, as well as including Sudan's neighbors in helping the Sudanese people solve their problems and fulfill all the necessities for solving the Sudanese crisis.
Meanwhile, on the IGAD (Inter-Governmental Authority on Development) initiative that is sponsored by the US and John Garang, leader of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement, El-Mahdi criticized it, saying, "It is difficult to achieve success in its current form because it is bilateral and partial, and even if it has succeeded in its current frame, it leads to the separation of northern and southern Sudan as well as continuing the war in another form."
"It also gives only two of the dispute's parties the right to decide Sudan's future, excluding the other parts, which is rejected," he said.
