Beijing ready to cooperate with Morocco in water desalination
Morocco-China, Economics, 10/29/1999

China said it was ready to cooperate with Morocco for the carrying out of a nuclear energy sea water desalination unit in southern Morocco.

The project can mark the start for Moroccan-Chinese cooperation in other fields, including sea studies and infrastructures, Chwaw Bangza, official spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Department, told the press in Rabat on Thursday.

The official made the statement on the fringes of the visit Chinese President Jiang Zemin is paying to Morocco.

Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi had told reporters earlier the same day after a meeting with President Zemin that Morocco is earnestly endeavoring to translate the project into reality.

Morocco and China concluded last year an accord for the construction of a nuclear energy sea water desalination unit in Tan Tan (southern Morocco).

The accord, concluded on the occasion of the official visit Youssoufi paid to China last December, crowns technical studies launched two years before on water desalination in the southern town of Tan Tan.

The 10-MW reactor will produce 8,000 cubic meters a day of water to supply some 70,000 inhabitants with drinking water.

The project, whose feasibility was approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency, will pave the way for the implementation of similar undertakings in the southern provinces to fight water scarcity in the area.
