Kuwaiti daily: US secretary of commerce dedicated visit to urging Gulf states to normalize relations with Israel
Kuwait-USA, Politics, 10/29/1999

The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am has criticized the visit made by US Secretary of Commerce William Daley to several Arab Gulf states, saying the visit was dedicated to urging the Arab Gulf states to maintain economic normalization with Israel, rather than searching to develop bilateral trade relations.

In its Thursday editorial, the paper said that Daley had pursued "a provocative way in his statements to the media men and university teachers with whom he met in Dubai in that his replies to them was in a language outside of diplomacy, were but a call to implement the US conditions that if the Gulf states want to cope with world trade openness, the first of these conditions is to maintain economic normalization with Israel."

The Kuwaiti paper added that the calls made by the US secretary of commerce did not receive the positive response he hoped to hear from people he talked to.

The paper added, "Mr. Daley must not forget the political events taking place in the region, events which do not even permit a word such as normalization as long as Israel continues its aggressions, intransigence and its refusal to peace process basics."
