The Italian presidency announced on Wednesday that Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will visit Italy on November 15 - 17 at the invitation of his Italian counterpart, Carlo Ciampi. Jordanian Senate Speaker Zayed Arrifai met in Rabat Wednesday King Mohammed VI whom he handed a message from King Abdullah of Jordan. Lieutenant General Magdi Hatatah, the chief of staff of the armed forces, visited yesterday with the Egyptian forces participating in the Bright Star's training 99 during which he checked up the joint leadership center for training. Lieutenant General Hatatah felt assured by the training works and the fighting readiness level of the Egyptian forces and their ability to work with modern technology being used in the training and using computers in planning and implementating operations for their training tasks. Algerian and Australian businessmen reached a memorandum of understanding to launch a venture to build 100,000 Housing units projected to cost $1 billion, the two sides said in a statement released on Wednesday. The two sides take part in a project to build 100,000 residential units for the low-income class. The cost of the project would be covered with $400 million in aid from the Algerian government and Australian companies and $1 million in loan. Go

Kuwait has decided to ban the import of poultry and eggs from Pakistan. A decision was taken by the general administration for the Kuwaiti agriculture and fishery affairs, to ban the import of all poultry and eggs from Pakistan. Go

Libyan President Moammar Gaddafi has denounced what he termed as the double-standard policy dealt with in the world. In a speech he delivered on Tuesday at al-Fateh University in Tripoli, the Libyan president stressed people's right to "have fears over their future and to search for means of power to defend themselves and protect their countries and capabilities as far as there is a colonialist mentality that gives itself the right to have control on peoples and their potentials." The UK yesterday appointed Richard Makepeace as Britain's ambassador to Sudan, effective immediately, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. Makepeace had been serving as charge d'affaires in Khartoum. Go

Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz on Wednesday in Riyadh opened King Fahd International Airport in the eastern district of Saudi Arabia. It is considered the eastern gate for Saudi Arabia and a regional center for local air aviation, as well as an important meeting point for linking the Far East with Europe. Go

The Yemeni government has decided to set up special courts to consider kidnapps and other crimes resulting from acts of bombardment. News reports from Yemen said this decision was taken following a meeting chaired by President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Tuesday. The news reports added that the new courts will be in the capital, Sanaa. Earlier, such cases used to be submitted to ordinary courts in the areas where the kidnappings take place. Go

The Jordanian journalists' union denied today that the syndicate's council has backed off from its former decision to dismiss three Jordanian journalists for violations of the union's decision not to travel to Israel or normalize relations with it, as they paid a visit to Israel last month. Go

Kuwait on Wednesday morning witnessed an early winter with a strong wind of 80 km per hour, accompanied by a very strong rainfall. The weather forecast department in Kuwait expected this state of instability in the weather will continue during the coming days. Wednesday's waterfall is the first for the current winter season in Kuwait. Go

The 1998-99 viticultural season recorded unprecedented production levels totalling 196,000 hectolitres, 66% more than the previous year. The weekly "La Vie Economique" which published the figures said this record production is a direct result of the promotion action plan launched in 1997 which called for a $80 million investment by the year 2000. An official source said today that a Sudanese military aircraft crashed west Omdurman area during important training yesterday. The sources said through a statement by the general leadership of the Sudanese armed forces yesterday that the captain died in the accident, while there are no other financial or humanitarian losses in the area in which the aircraft crashed. King Mohammed VI met in Rabat Wednesday with three ambassadors from Islamic countries who took leave from the sovereign at the end of their mission in the kingdom. Syrian Ambassador Ali Hassan, Pakistani Ambassador Azmat Hassan and Iranian Ambassador Hussein Sobhani were decorated with medals of the Alawit orders by the king. Go

US aircraft flying as part of Operation Northern Watch, which enforces the "no-fly zone" over northern Iraq, attacked today "Surface-to-Air-Missiles (SAMs) at a site east of Mosul," after being fired on by Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery from northeast of Mosul and south of Saddam Dam, the US European Command said.
